What is Dedicated Hosting?

When we speak of web hosting servers, there are three major sorts - shared web hosting servers, VPS (virtual web servers) and dedicated servers. Shared web hosting servers host many clients and hence the resources per account are restricted, VPS packages offer more server configuration autonomy, but also influence other virtual private web hosting servers on the hardware node if used imprudently, and dedicated servers give you the freedom to do everything you choose without interfering with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated server?

Dedicated servers are traditionally much more expensive than shared hosting web servers or virtual private web hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The answer is rather simple. If your company has a resource-devouring web site, or simply has very precise web server setup requirements, the most appropriate option is a dedicated server. For somebody who is ready to invest in security and reliability, the bigger price is not an issue. You are given full root access and can utilize 100 percent of the dedicated web hosting server's resources without anyone else availing of these resources and messing with your web pages.

Hardware architectures

Most hosting service providers, incl. us at Master Web Manager, offer several hardware architectures you can pick from on the basis of your requirements. The configurations include different types of microprocessors, a different amount of cores, different RAM memory and hard disk sizes and different monthly traffic quotas. You can choose a hosting Control Panel, which is a handy software tool if you want to use the dedicated hosting server for hosting purposes only and prefer not to use an SSH console for all the modifications you will be making. We offer 3 types of web hosting CP software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The web hosting CP of your choice

If you are a confident Linux OS user (our servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could administer your dedicated server through a Secure Shell connection only. That, however, could be inconvenient, particularly if you choose to give complete server root access to somebody else who has less technical expertise than yourself. That is why having web hosting CP software pre-activated is an excellent idea. The Hepsia hosting Control Panel graphical user interface that we provide does not give you full root-level access and is chiefly suitable for somebody who maintains many sites that demand a lot of resources, but wants to manage the web portals, databases and email addresses through an intuitive hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel hosting CPs, on the other hand, give you full server root privileges and include three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell hosting accounts rather than utilizing the dedicated server just for yourself, you should pick one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated server and of backing it up. In the event of a predicament with your dedicated hosting web server, like an unresponsive Apache or a downtime, it is useful to have some kind of monitoring system enabled. Here at Master Web Manager the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated server as well. Backups are also a bonus feature - the web hosting vendor offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could pick a type of RAID that would permit you to store the very same data on two hard disks as a protective measure in the event of a server hard disk failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted full root-level access erases something accidentally.
